Anxiety is prevalent, not just in humans, but also in dogs. Recent studies have shown that 40% of pets experience anxiety. Have you ever noticed your dogs go anxious whenever a thunderstorm rolls in? Try to observe them during the New Year or Fourth of July, when fireworks are aplenty. Phobias, experience-based fear, trauma, and separation are also other causes of anxiety.
What is CBD?
The good news is that an all natural product can dramatically reduce the anxiety and stress that you or your pets are feeling. Forego the pricey and not so safe anti-anxiety medications and try Cannabidiol or CBD.
Cannabidiol, also known as CBD, is a natural chemical compound or cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant. The cannabis plant has two types- marijuana and hemp. The hemp contains all the cannabinoids, including CBD but fret not, it contains less than 0.3% of THC. THC is the component related with that “high” feeling. Unlike marijuana, this is legal in all 50 states here in the US as well as in Mexico and Canada.
How does it work?
CBD interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system to aid in carrying messages between cells and work with two types of receptors- CB1 and CB2. Because dogs have more receptors in their system more than humans, positive effects of CBD are felt more intensely in them than in us. Therefore calming our anxious dogs and bringing them to a state of calmness.
Enlisted below are four steps to managing a dog’s anxiety with CBD.
1. Familiarize yourself with the common symptoms of anxiety.
First things, first. Does your dog have anxiety attacks? Be wary of the symptoms of anxiety. The presence of trembling, licking and biting at itself, panting, restlessness is just a few of the symptoms of dog anxiety. To help your dog, you must remember to be calm and act normally during anxious situations. During the Fourth of July, when fireworks are at their loudest, try to cuddle them to prevent them from having their anxiety attacks.
2. Consider talking to a professional veterinarian.
As with any other medication, for dogs or humans, getting the right dosage is essential. There are two things to consider when getting the right formula and dosage for your dogs- the size and weight of your dog. However, the safest route would always be to consult your trusty vet for the dosage before giving your dogs any.
3. Use calming treats.
The more popular CBD is the CBD oil for dogs. However, administering this to your dogs can be a little tricky. This oil has a bitter taste, which when tasted by your furry babies tend to send them running in the other direction. Luckily there are calming CBD dog treats just in case you really can’t get them to take the oil.
4. Therapy is good for dogs, too.
Pair your CBD medication with therapy or exercises. If your dog has anxiety over separation issues, give your dog his CBD oil or treat and wait for an hour or two. Afterward, leave the room or the house for about 15 minutes as normally as you can, don’t make a fuss. Repeat this step in increasing the duration of leaving your dog alone at home until you feel that he no longer feels anxious whenever you leave.
