Urinary incontinence, or bladder leakage is a loss of control of the bladder. This can range from minor leakage to a complete loss of control of your bladder. The condition can be temporary or chronic, depending on what is causing it. This issue effects men as well as women and if you have bladder leakage, you know it is no joke. I personally suffer from light bladder leakage which was due to the birth of my last child who weighed in at a whopping 10 pounds. There are several causes for this inconvenient (to say the least) condition and here are just a few of them:
3 Types Of Bladder Leakage
- Stress Urinary Incontinence: This happens when your pelvic floor muscles become weak or you have a deficient urethral sphincter. It can also happen when you go through menopause, have children or for men, if they have prostate cancer.
- Overactive Bladder: If you have an overactive bladder or urgency urinary incontinence, you have the urgent need to pass urine and the inability to get to a toilet in time. If this has happened to you, it could be due to damaged nerves between the brain and the bladder. This could be caused by stroke, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and multiple sclerosis (MS). The good news is bladder retraining programs for women and men have been successful.
- Mixed Incontinence: This is actually what I have, which is a mix between both OA and SUI. This is very common, especially in women and men over 40, which I am well over now.
When it comes to bladder leakage, there are two types of people; those who have experienced it and those who have not. If you fall into the first category, you will sympathize with the following story. If you are in the latter, you may get a big chuckle and feel sorry for me! After the birth of my son, who was my third, I began to experience light bladder leakage. This would typically happen when I sneezed or laughed a bit too hard. I got very good at squeezing my legs together and controlling my laughter or sneezing. Sometimes I would wear a pad if I would be gone from the house for an extended period of time, but I often forgot. One afternoon about 5 years ago, I was at a friend’s house for a dinner party. We had several families there, so there were a lot of people. The kids and I went outside and started jumping on the trampoline. I was laughing so hard, I peed in my pants…right there in front of everyone. I was so embarrassed! I have never left the house without a pad or a pair of Depend® for women for bladder leakage protection again.
