We are redecorating Caitlin’s bedroom as her 16th birthday gift. She came to me a few months ago and asked me to come into her bedroom to look at something. I walked in and she told me to take a look at her bedroom and tell her if it was too “babyish” for a 16 year old. I had to admit the decor we choose almost 5 years ago was no longer relevant for a maturing young woman. We have had a lot of fun changing out just about everything in the room. We left the lighting for last because I wanted to make sure all the decor was in place first. I had no idea where to start when it came to how to choose the right bedroom lighting, so I did some research. Here is what I found:
Choosing The Perfect Bedroom Lighting In 4 Easy Steps
- Size Matters: The first thing to take into consideration when choosing bedroom lighting is the size of your room. You do not want to overwhelm a small room with a huge chandelier lamp. Nor do you want to lose a delicate lamp in a larger room.
- Make A Statement: You should take your decor into account when choosing the lighting for your bedroom. If you have an old Hollywood feel to your room, you certainly do not want a small flea market find milk bottle lamp. It just will not look right. Make sure your lighting compliments the decor, not fight with it.
- Layering Lighting: No one said you should buy just one bedside lamp and call it a day. To make the room more interesting as well as functional, choose 3-4 different lights and placement for the lights. This will add sophistication and style.
- Add Ambiance: No matter the room you are choosing your lighting for, you should play with the ambiance of the room. Add some color or the glow of a candle to add subtle and playful lighting into your bedroom.
As much as I love candles, we “are not allowed” to have them in the house. Henry has had a fear of fire and flames since he was very small. Even if I light the smallest candle, he is quick to blow it out. We even struggle with birthday candles on his cake every year. The smartest solution I have found are the flameless candles. They give off the same kind of lighting a candle does but it is safer. Caitlin loves candles but in respect for her brothers fears, we decided to add some unique flameless lighting from Lights.com for her bedroom. With Lights.com, you can find a huge selection of lighting products for your home, office or dorm room. They offer high quality lighting at an affordable price, which I love!
We chose two different options from Lights.com for Caitlin’s bedroom. Her room has black, white, grey and lavender for her color scheme. I chose the large Holographic Star Lantern in white, which sells for $34, which is perfect for her black bedside table. When lit, the lantern illuminates the area with holographic shooting stars in 3D. You get the coolest light show with the 24 star shaped LED lights. For her small wall bookcase, we chose the Moroccan Gate Flameless Wax Candle Trio with Timer, which sells for $25. These 3 pretty flameless candles are made of carved wax, and are perfect for her cubby. The lights take 2 AA batteries and have a 5-hour timer, making it more energy efficient. I just love how her room has such a pretty glow with the combination of the lantern and wax candles. When she is going to sleep and wants a soft light, they are perfect. These light would also look great in the living room, kitchen or even the bathroom.
