Container Vegetable Gardening

With fall right around the corner, it is time to start thinking of what I want to do in terms of gardening for the coming season.  While it is true most of Florida's trees don't turn the brilliant orange, red, and yellow colors our northern neighbors flaunt, we can bring color to our porches, patios, and balconies through container vegetable gardening.

Lettuce Container Gardening

Lettuce container gardening for example, need not be all green. Add Bright Lights Swiss Chard, Red Head Lettuce and Calmar to your lettuce pots for brilliant orange, yellow, green and red color through most of the winter months. Adding different colors and textures make a beautiful pot of lettuce. It is easy to Find beauty in the Fall.

If you are interested in creating your own lettuce pot, below is the recipe for creating your fall pot.

  • First you will need to prepare the soil.  Lettuce grows best in soil that is loose, sandy and slightly acidic.  It should be free of dirt clots and rocks.  Make sure your soil is amended with compost or other organic matter in order to yield a great pot of lettuce.  Miracle-Gro Organic Choice Garden Soil contains organic ingredients as well as all-natural plant food.  This is a great additive to your soil for growing your lettuce or any vegetable.
  • Next you want to sow your lettuce seeds.  You should sow your seeds thinly across the surface and then cover lightly with soil.  Water the area well.   Continue to keep the soil moist, but not drenched and also pull up any wayward weeds that make their way into your pot.

  • When the leaves are about 6 inches high, cut them with a pair of scissors.  Keep them fresh until you are ready to use them by putting them in a moistened, sealed bag.  They will continue to re-grow several times before they will need to be replaced.

It is great having fresh lettuce right in your backyard for all your salads and sandwiches.
