Growing up and living with my grandparents and my mom, traditionally we never ate meals as a family throughout the year. However, we did always celebrate the holidays together as a family. We had a very small family so it was easy to fit all of us at one table. It was only my grandparents, my mom, my sister, my two uncles and I. One of my uncles lived out-of-state, and still does, so this was the only time of the year we would see him. Also, my sister is 5 years older than me so for the better part of my years living at my grandparent’s house my sister lived elsewhere.
Holiday Meal Traditions
We did not have a specific holiday tradition there was always one thing my grandmother did every single time we ate together during the holidays. She would take a picture of all of us sitting at the table as a family. We would always laugh and have a good time with it, but I never really thought much of it until I got older. With both of my grandparents now being gone, it is one of the great ways to look back on them and remember moments from that occasion.
We still have a small extended family, and with my grandparents passing it has gotten a whole lot smaller. But my family and my sister’s family have grown a lot since we are both married and have three children each. We do still get together for a meal during each of the holidays, but it is more about the kids now and helping them create lasting positive memories.
One of the things my sister and I enjoy doing even outside of the holidays is getting all of us together for dinner at a restaurant. It is a wonderful way for us to just stay connected throughout the busy times of they year without feeling like we have to invest a lot of time and money with cooking and cleanup. This is one of the reasons why I love giving them gift cards to Darden restaurants as a Christmas gift, although I think receiving a gift card to a restaurant is wonderful anyway.
Darden has a lot of yummy restaurants to eat at, including Red Lobster, Olive Garden, and LongHorn Steakhouse. Right now, and for a limited time, if you purchase a Darden gift card during this holiday season you can receive a $5 bonus for every $25 gift card you purchase at Olive Garden, Red Lobster or LongHorn Steakhouse restaurants.
What holiday meal traditions do you and your family share?
I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Darden. I received a promotional item as a thank-you for participating.
