Easy No Sew Pillow Covers Tutorial

I love to decorate and if I had the money, I would change out everything about every 6 months! Since I do not have a gazillion dollars to re-decorate at my every whim, I do small things that make a difference. Last month, I made some no sew curtains for my kitchen and it was way cheaper to make them than to buy new. The other reason I prefer to do it this way is because I can usually find fabric I like much easier than curtains I like. I taught myself how to use a sewing machine and have been making clothes and stuff for my home for many years. This has saved us a lot of money on re-decorating for sure! BUT, you do not need to know how to use a sewing machine in order to make some cool stuff for your home. I make a lot of things for the house with a no sew version, like the pillow covers I am going to show you how to make in this super easy no sew pillow covers tutorial.

I chose two really cute and contrasting but complementary fabrics from Organic Cotton Plus. I chose yard each of the Dapple Dot (the lighter fabric) and Zipper Tape (the darker fabric). When you buy your fabric from Organic Cotton Plus, you are buying from the FIRST US retailer to be fully GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified. In addition to a ton of amazing organically farmed fabrics choices, Organic Cotton Plus also carries yard and plenty of notions for your project. You can find zippers, binding, thread, tape and more and they are completely affordable. So, let’s get started, shall we?

How To Make No Sew Pillow Covers

Materials Needed

  • Fabric
  • Iron On Hem Tape
  • Scissors
  • Tape Measure or Yard Stick
  • Iron
  • Ironing Board or Flat Surface to Iron On
  • Hemming Guide (optional)

Instructions:

  1. To measure your fabric, you need to measure your pillow first. My pillow is 17 inches wide and 12 inches tall. You want to your fabric to be twice the width plus 4 inches, so for my pillow, that was 17 x 2 = 34 + 4= 38. The height of the fabric will be the same as the height of your pillow, so mine is 12 inches.
  2. Now you will hem the two short sides of the pillow. For mine, that would be the 12 inches. I prefer to use a hemming gauge because it is easier for me, but you can use your tape measure or yard stick. With the fabric laying with the pattern side down, turn up the edge of the short side by 1/2 inch and iron flat. Turn this edge over another 1/2 inch and iron down, and now you have a clean edge. Repeat on the other side.
  3. Take your iron on tape and measure a piece the width of the side you just hemmed in Step 3. Slip it under the fold and iron down, following the directions on the package. About 15-20 seconds should be sufficient. Repeat on the other side.
  4. Next you will fold the two hemmed edges towards each other and line them up, one under the other. If you prefer, you can also make one side a bit longer than the other to avoid it “popping” out in the middle, in the event you cut a bit too short (which I have done more than once lol).
  5. Turn the cover so the folded sides are to your left and right and the un-bonded side is facing you. Measure a length of iron on tape that equals the length facing you and tear. Slip the tape under the open edge and iron down. I slide the tape up just a smidgen so it does not hang out of the edge of the fabric. Turn the fabric and repeat on the other side.
  6. Now turn the cover right side out and press. Insert pillow, smooth and you are done! See the picture at the top of the post for the finished product!
