If you are a parent, you know that most of your holiday parties are going to include kids. You may have an office party or two which are adult only, but for the most part, the kiddos are part of the party package. I have been to my share of holiday parties that kids were in attendance and you were hard pressed to find anything for them to do. It is kind of like the kids table at Thanksgiving; they get stuck in the corner and then the adults go about their business, forgetting the kids are really there. Well, if you are coming to my house, you are going to get a kid friendly party that will make everyone happy. Here are a few tips for throwing the best family friendly party on the block!
How To Make Your Holiday Party Family Friendly
- Choose A Reasonable Time: If you are going to have kids at the party, you do not want to start it too late. If you are going to be serving food, consider asking guests to arrive when they would normally have their evening meal. This will help the younger kids stay on a schedule.
- Consider A Babysitter: If you have little ones coming to the party, do not count on the older kids keeping an eye on them. Consider hiring a babysitter to keep the young party guests safe and occupied.
- Serve Kid Friendly Food: When you are planning the menu, be sure to offer kid friendly foods and beverages. I always serve chicken strips, mac and cheese bowls and plenty of snacks to keep their munchies under control.
- Offer Kid Friendly Entertainment: Face it, at a party, the kids only want to be where the adults are if they are bored. To avoid this from happening, have plenty of games, toys and activities available. For the younger kids, make a crafting station and a quiet area to watch television. For the older kids, they will appreciate some family favorites from the Hasbro Toy Shop.
My family is big on board games, and some of our favorites are Taboo and Catch Phrase. I could not have been more excited when I found out you can get the “to-go” version as the kids call it, or Taboo Buzz’d. This electronic hand held version, which sells for $20, but is currently on sale for $$17, is perfect for parties, long car rides or family game night. This game of forbidden words is what we call “pee in your pants” fun because it makes you laugh so hard you are afraid you may pee in your pants! The basic premise is you try to get your team to guess a word but you are limited as to the descriptive words you can say. So if you have snow man, you may not be able to say words like, cold, “Frosty”, carrot, top hat, etc.
We also have the handheld version of Catch Phrase called Catch Phrase Decades, which normally retails for $20, but is on sale for $15. This game is great for your family friendly holiday party. It comes with over 5,000 words and phrases from the 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s and 10s and you can even choose the decade you want to play The goal is to get your team to guess the word or phrase that appears on the screen by describing it any way you can. If you have a nice day or have enough room in the house, the kids can burn off some steam with the Nerf N-Strike Elite Precision Target Set which is just $10. The kids have a target to shoot their gun, which has a laser for accuracy. Or, if you live in my house, your sister is your target and she burns off calories by running from her brother! That is why we love the products from Nerf! They are safe to play in or outside of the house and the kids do not get hurt. One USA reader will win Taboo Buzz’d and Catch Phrase Decades ARV $32.
