The Caretakers – Gift Ideas For Book Lovers
If you are a book lover or looking for a gift for one, The Caretakers is a great pick. In my opinion it should be a part of a monthly book club for discussion or a book of the month for a friend.
I was looking for the perfect summer read when I was presented with the oppurtunity to review The Caretakers by Shauna Nosler.  I have this thing about books, I need to be in the right frame of mind when I read them.  I did the unthinkable and didn’t read the back cover before I started, I just dove right in unaware.  The book is set in the early 1970s right before the Roe v. Wade decision was handed down.  It’s a captivating story about a family who appears to be perfect from the outside looking in but that couldn’t be further from the truth.  With parents who are constantly traveling, one of the main characters Mae (a teenager at the time) makes a life-changing decision, a decision her older brother knows all about unbeownest to Mae.  Mae experiences more loss in a short period of time than most see in a lifetime and still perseveres and moves on with life.  As an adult, she never marries or has children but is very close with her brother’s children (Caroline, Mitch and Cecil), who come to visit every summer.  She is the aunt everyone wishes they had, the children adore their aunt and their time together bonding as each summer passes.  The children become very close, best friends you would say and even though they had the occasional spat, they confide in each other and support one another.  At the end of the summer, their trip is cut short and a terrible accident happens one that will rock the foundation of the family and something I didn’t see coming.  I won’t spoil it for anyone, it is a must read.  Each page kept me longing for more, I love how the characters come full circle and find out things about themselves and their family they never would have known had circimstances been different.
