Five Ideas On How To Get Your Teenager To Be More Responsible

I am finding it hard to wrap my head around the idea that I am getting older! I feel it in my body but my mind is still several decades behind those aches and pains! There are days when I am feeling silly and I feel like I am more like a teenager! It is hard to believe my daughter is going to be 16 in a few months. I remember what a hard time I gave my mom when I was that age. Thankfully, Caitlin is not letting history repeat itself. She is really a good kid, almost a straight A student and loves hanging out with her family. Now is the time I need to help her take accountability for her actions on a more mature level. It is important kids learn to be more responsible so they can grow into a responsible and mature adult. Here are a few tips to get your teen pointed in the right direction:

5 Ideas To Get Your Teen To Be Responsible

  1. Set Standards: You cannot expect your teen to be responsible if they do not have a moral ground from which to start from. Kids are going to challenge your beliefs and standards, but if you stick to them, they will embrace them as their own.
  2. Set Rules: In order to measure the success or failure of your child’s actions, you need to have a set of rules in place. This way, your teen will know what time to be home, when to do their homework and chores and what is acceptable behavior in the home.
  3. Be Respectful: We all know respect is earned, but that goes two ways. We cannot expect our teens to be respectful of us if we are not respectful of them. Teens who have a high self esteem from being built up and encouraged and who are respected, make healthier choices.
  4. Think Of Others: One way to allow teens to gain responsibility is to think of someone besides themselves. Let them volunteer at a women’s or homeless shelter or at a day care or assisted living facility.
  5. Take Baby Steps: Before you lay a bunch of responsibility on your teen, start slow and small. For instance, set a bed time and a time to get up in the morning and make them do this on their own. Resist the urge to remind them to go to bed or beg them to get up. Also, be ready to allow them to face the consequences if they are late getting to bed or getting up in the morning.

I will admit, I have been the one telling the kids 100 times to go to be every night. The next morning, I am the one who opens their door and tells them to get up every 15 minutes. I do this until the last possible minute before they are going to be late. In order to cut the cord with Caitlin, so to speak, I had to allow Caitlin to be responsible for going to bed and getting up.
