How To Protect Your Feet While Running

If you are a runner, knowing how to protect your feet while running is important.  If you are a seasoned runner, you most likely have your mental checklist of all the things you need to do before you hit the pavement.  For the beginners in the bunch, you may not know what you need to avoid harming your feet.  When I first started running, I had no idea what I needed, so I just put on some sneakers and took off.  I found pretty quickly there was more to this sport than I thought.  In hopes of saving you from a lot of discomfort and possibly some pain, here is some great information to get you started in the right direction.

Tips To Protect Your Feet While Running

  •  Surface: The first decision you should make is where you are going to run.  Although for many of us the most convenient surface to run on is one of the worst!  If you plan to run on pavement or concrete, you are running the risk of not only injuring your feet, but your ankles, legs, knees and hips.  Whenever possible, run on grass or another natural surface but if those are not available, many fitness clubs have a track made specifically to be easier on your body.
  • Schedule: Choose a schedule that will let you build up gradually so you are not in danger of injuring yourself.  There are many online running clinics that can help you choose a routine that works best for you.  The best plan is to not only alternate walking and running at first, but also alternating days.  This allows your body to pace itself for the workout you are working towards.
  • Shoes: Shoes are one of the most crucial tools you can choose for your journey to becoming a runner.  Many pairs of shoes are designed with technology that will protect your feet.  It is best if you can have a podiatrist check out your feet in order to go over any issues you may have.  Many people don’t know if they are flat footed or have a high arch, so how can they properly choose the right shoe?
  • Socks: As important as a proper pair of running shoes are the proper socks.  If you decide to put on a pair of socks out of your drawer that came from the discount store.  These are absolutely the wrong socks for you if you are planning on learning how to run.  There are many companies that make socks that will prevent blisters or moisture, but few that can also make sure your toes are in the right position like Injinji.

The Best Running Socks

If you are looking for the best running socks, you need to do some research and make sure you choose well.  After doing a lot of research, I felt Injinji socks were the best choice to protect my feet while running.  The unique design of these toe socks will keep your feet from blistering, getting wet or pressing your toes in the wrong position.  With the revolutionary design of the Injinji sock, your toes are put into proper alignment and the splay (the spread) is correct.  If you are a runner, you know how important the position of your toes is for the success of your run.  Injinji, who are based in San Diego, is committed to raising the standards for athletes, both seasoned and new.  The best way to understand the power of the toe sock is by watching this short video.  I was sent a variety of the socks from Injinji that ranged from their Lightweight Performance No Show sock ($10.00), the Outdoor Quarter Original Weight ($16.00) to the Original Weight Toeless Yoga sock ($16.00).  Injinji is excited to present a newly designed website as well as the launch of their new blog!  With my leg in a cast, I wasn’t able to “test” out the Injinji socks in the way I hoped, but I can attest that just walking in them made a world of difference in how my foot felt after a day in them.  I would highly recommend these socks to anyone; runner or not!
