This sugar cookie recipe was handed down from Mama Lila, the same person who taught my mother and me to make biscuits. She was married to my grandfather and was, for all intensive purposes, a grandmother. She learned to make them from her grandmother who smuggled the cookies to conscientious objectors who hid in the caves of north Jefferson County during the Civil War. The recipe is the exact same as it was then except that instead of using a dutch oven, we bang out a triple order with our Samsung Dual-Door Electric Range. So easy.
- 1½ c powdered sugar
- 1 c butter
- 1 t vanilla
- 1 egg
- 2½ c all purpose flour
- 1 t baking soda
- 1 t baking powder
- ½ c sugar
- cream butter and sugar
- mix in vanilla
- mix in egg
- mix flour, soda, and powder
- add flour mix to butter
- mix until blended into a wet dough
- roll into golf balls and sprinkle with sugar
- bake at 350 for 20 min or until cookies begin to brown
It’s not just that they’re easy, but they really are. When something this good comes from scratch, it’s a special treat and it just makes you look good. Meals at Mama Lily’s house had all kinds of homemade delicacies. Everything on her supper table was made from scratch and looked like it took three days to prepare.
Supper is a southern term for a large lunch around one o’clock that always seemed like some kind of formal event. Hers usually included fried chicken, biscuits, and some of the best gravy in the south. These cookies are so good, even the cats try to get a bite!
Mama Lily’s sugar cookies were cooked in a Samsung Dual Door Electric Range. This oven has a dividing element that creates two mini ovens and lets you control their heat independently.
You will have greater flexibility while cooking two things at once or by cooking several of the same thing like sugar cookies! Since you have the ability to open the top half without bothering the bottom you get a faster pre-heat time and better energy efficiency which translates to more money in your pocket. The cook top has several settings to accommodate different pot sizes leaving the heat to concentrate to the size you are using. Less heat used means, yep, more money in my pocket!
Large batches of cookies can finally rotate non-stop thanks to the divider accessory. When you open one door it doesn’t impact the other side. All that heat stays in for better cooking and keeps my Florida home cooler in these hot summer months. Don’t you think it also looks great in my kitchen?
