Do you have certain foods that when you eat them, they can catapult you back to your childhood? For me, that is just about any snack that is crunchy and salty like pretzels or popcorn. My dad drove a city bus in downtown Cleveland, OH and his days were brutally long and exhausting. When he got home, all he wanted to do was have a nice dinner and then relax on the couch and watch some TV. As my sister and I waited patiently for him each night, we would sit on the floor next to the sofa and watch TV with him. He would have a big bowl of popcorn or a can of Charles Chips and we would all share it. My kids are huge popcorn fans and we eat about a bushel full every week or so! When we are trying out new recipes for the holidays, we usually have something popcorn related. This year, for Halloween, we decide to make my Monster Mash Halloween Popcorn Mix, which is a favorite of my kids and husband. It is a great mix of sweet, salty and crunchy, which is perfect for us.
When it comes to the kind of popcorn I will eat, I am very picky about that. I hate microwave popcorn because I think it has a weird aftertaste, no matter what brand I try. So instead, I buy popcorn kernels and make them in a pasta pot on the stove top. The problem with making popcorn like this is getting the heat even and the kernels to all pop. I usually end up scorching my pan with a mixture of burnt and non burnt popcorn and a bunch of un-popped kernels at the bottom of the bowl. Gross! Thank goodness for the Kettle Popcorn Maker from Waring, which you can purchase for just $120 from Wal-Mart, Macy’s, Kohl’s, Overstock and many other fine retailers.
