I really enjoyed reading Out of a Far Country a book authored by mother and son, (Angela and Christopher Yuan) its not a book I would typically read so it was a nice change for me and I was pleasantly surprised at how it captivated me.  I liked how each chapter was written either by Christopher or Angela it gave me a great perspective at how each was feeling and what they were going through each step of the way.  My favorite character was Angela, as a mother myself I sometimes wonder how my children will turn out.  Am I being the best mother I can be? Will my actions and ways of raising them, in turn make them productive members of society?  Angela did everything she thought was necessary for her children to go on and take over the family dental business.  But things didn’t work out the way she planned, in fact the very worst that could happen in every circumstance happened to her son.  He came full circle after he hit rock bottom and the their family story did have a happy ending (although Christopher does still have to live with the consequences of his actions everyday for the rest of this life).  This book took several twists and turns that I didn’t expect but kept me on the edge of my seat and the pages turning. It is an inspiring story.  I thought the discussion guide at the end of the book was a great tool for personal reflection.

You can purchase this book on,, Borders and Barnes & Noble ($14.99). If you would like a little preview you can download the first chapter of the book.
