Paragould, Arkansas is located on Crowley’s Ridge in northeast Arkansas. Almost being stomped by the Missouri boot heel! The name is a combination of the last names of J.W. Paramore and Jay Gould who owned the two railroads that crossed in the town. It is the home of the Loose Caboose Festival which has been held annually for the last 22 years. The festival is held downtown by the railroad tracks where the old caboose is still parked. I guess you know where the festival got its name?
The festival takes place the third weekend in May. That is this coming weekend from Thursday May 19th to Saturday May 21st this year. If you are in northeast Arkansas come on by! There are lots of things going on including live music, pig races, pony rides, and a Carnival.
The Collins Theater in downtown Paragould brings cultural events to the region throughout the year. The Green County Fine Arts Council performs musicals and plays and the Eastern Arkansas Ballet also performs there. There are also country music performances as well as talent shows. There is something happening there almost every week.
There are also many other attractions within driving distance. Crowley’s Ridge state Park is just down the road a few miles as is Lake Frierson State Park. The Ozark-St. Francis National Forests are only a few hours drive away and include Blanchard Srpings Caverns as well as many outdoor recreational opportunities. If you like more cosmopolitan action…the city of Memphis is only 88 miles away. This means Beale Street, Graceland, The Pink Palace Musuem, The Orpheum, and many nightclubs and restaurants are only a couple of hours away.
