Let’s be honest. Most people tend to only think of a certain device when the topic of portable music players comes up. But I can tell you with no reservations that the SanDisk® Sansa® Clip Zip™ MP3 Player is a device that won’t make you miss that “other thing” at all.
If you heard me talk about all the specific requirements I have for working out you would think I’m in the gym 8 hours a day. In reality all the careful preparations are just things that I make up so that I can skip going. Sad, I know. But inventing things that make me not have to schlep myself to the treadmill is sort of a fun past time. But when I talk about playing music while I work out, it’s not a joke. Here’s the rundown of my requirements:
- It has to come with a clip. I don’t want to mess with a bunch of aftermarket stuff to strap it to my arm or around my head. I just want a clip that is going to fasten the thing to my waist band. The Sansa fits the bill.
- It needs to be lightweight. If it is clipped to my waist I need it to not make my pants fall down. Sansa wins again.
- It needs to be easy to control. If I don’t like the song that’s on, I need to be able to switch it fast. The Sansa has nice big buttons and a big readable display (bonus).
But there are a couple tricks up the (get ready for the whole name) Sansa® Clip Zip™ MP3 Player. They are simple things that make the device more than a music player. I can’t decide which I like better so I will do them in alphabetical order. J
It’s a radio. Simple, right? But that one thing makes it far superior in my view. I can load my player up with 4GB of songs but at some point I’m going to get bored. And the only way to beat that is to listen to new things. It’s good to hear new things. And using the radio also makes me feel like I’m accomplishing something when I work out. If I’m not in the mood for music, I’ll listen to the news or NPR. I learn more in an hour on the treadmill than I do in the rest of my day.
The other great feature is the recorder. Now, I have to say that I’m not much for leaving myself voice memos. But with this device I could if I wanted to. And it also records the radio! THAT’s fun.
So given everything that it does, and add to that the fact that you can expand the memory using a card you have yourself one great music player. It might not begin with an “I” but it does everything the other players do and more. To be honest, it would have been worth it before I ever got to the radio part. With the radio it is a slam dunk.
