Going on family vacations has gotten increasingly difficult over the years.  Between the flight, hotel, food and attractions it has just not fit into our budget. Staying local or not going on vacation seems to be a growing trend with the families I know. In today’s economy, family vacations are often unaffordable.

Six Flags_Poltergeist and Scream.tif

We may actually try to get away for a weekend this summer, which would be great since the kids have been begging to go somewhere.  While we were looking for somewhere to go that had a deal we came across a great value pack that has been put together in the SAVE – San Antonio Vacation Experience.

Six Flags SkyScreamer.jpg

San Antonio is trying to make summer getaways more affordable with SAVE (the San Antonio Vacation Experience). There are a ton of great things to save on, such as: theme parks, animal adventures historic tours, great deals on hotels, and much more.  There is more than $600 in savings being offered by the SAVE program.

SchlitterbahnCongoRiver.jpg

We are not planning a larger trip like this for this year, but my husband and I were mulling around the idea for something in the future.  We did talk a little bit about the attractions we would go to and where we would like to stay.

Splashtown11.JPG

SeaWorld would be a blast, especially since it is debuting “Aquatica”, an 18-acre aquatic park with up-close animal experiences, high-speed thrills and relaxing, sandy beaches.  The SAVE discount include deals on family-four packs, second day free, $10 off admission and more.

SanAntonioZoo.jpeg

Six Flags Fiesta Texas features over 50 rides and attractions, including eight roller coasters. New at Fiesta Texas is the SkyScreamer swing ride that provides aerial views that surpass the park’s quarry walls.  The SAVE discounts include adults pay kids price, buy an adult ticket and get a child’s free, next day free and more.

A waterpark sounds like a lot of fun, especially in the summer in San Antonio!  I would love to go check out Schlitterbahn The Falls.  It has the world’s longest waterpark ride at 3,600 feet at continuous rapids.  The SAVE discount is up to $10. Limited Time Offers

In staying with the waterparks, we would also like to visit Splashtown.  It has over 50 rides and attractions, concerts, and a “Dive In Movie” nights for families.  The SAVE discount is up to $42.

We would love to experience the plants and animals of Africa and go on a safari in San Antonio at the San Antonio Zoo’s exhibit Africa Live!  It has exotic exhibits and even an African street market!  The SAVE is $2 off admission.

SeaWorld Aquatica_Ray Lagoon Family.jpg

We would love to stay in the downtown area at the Grand Hyatt San Antonio!  The SAVE rates there are from $129 – $289. This is an excellent hotel to stay at for those who suffer with allergies!  They actually go through a 6-step process called Respire to reduce airborne particles and minimize the presence of potential irritants.

This really does sound like it would be an excellent vacation.  SAVE makes vacationing more affordable, especially for larger families.

If you would like to plan a trip to San Antonio, stap up-to-date on all the deals, limited time offers, and ideas to help plan your trip by following them on @SAVEinSA

  226. My favorite “vacation” was a 3-day weekend with my other-half right before he was my other-half. I drove on my first solo road trip to Orlando to pick him up and spent 9 hours blasting CD’s and singing anything I wanted! While we there, he took me on an airboat ride, which I have always wanted to do- I held onto him and laughed my butt off while we raced all over the place and I was scared to death and loving it! I met lots of his family for the first time. then I brought him and his son back and we had a great fun ride back 🙂

While I’m not sure what happened to the book of Disney character autograpsh, we still have the Japanese mask that my son got at Epcot.

  235. my favorite is to and has been to drive down to the mississippi gulf coast ALONE. i play it by ear. it’s only a couple of hours so if i lose all my money the first day i can drive home. if not can usually get free rooms and meals from the casino. best trip got 5 nights and all meals. spent less than 400$ plus vouchers for future rooms, meals, and cash

  248. My Mom and Stepdad took a trip to San Antonio last year a had a blast. The SAVE program sounds like it would certainly help you save.

  249. My favourite place to go every year is to Durban (South Africa) to go when my husband run the comrades. Its like a working holiday for me.To see that everything goes right for my husband`s race while sightseeing in between.

  251. We always went to the beach or the zoo or caverns when we
were kids. Now I havent been on a vacation for over 15 years.

  252. I haven’t been on a vacation in a while. I would love to say “We went to Scotland and….” Not true, so I can not lie. My favorite vacation was a few years ago. I went with my children, sister, brother and the whole gang to stay in a cabin close to Paris Landing in Tennessee. We fished, went biking, sit around the fire at night. I was so much fun!

  253. I’m not sure we can afford a vacation this year, but this past weekend we took my four month old son on a day trip to Seaside Heights, NJ, and had an awesome time! My husband and I loved taking my son on the beach and in the water for the first time.

  254. My favorite vacation is going to Mackinaw Bridge. I love it up there. My favorite part is sitting on the hotel balcony at night, looking at the Bridge all lit up over the water.

  255. Our church group went on a pilgrimage to Italy for 12 days. It was an awesome experience that I was thankful just to be a part of.

  256. The vacations that I remember as being the very best were affordable and really quite simple, as Disney and such were simply beyond our meager vacation budget. The vacations we remember the most often and laugh about are cottage vacations, cottages rented either through friends or at cottage resorts. Enjoying nature, hikes, the beach, showers in waterfalls, boating and the all time favorite nightly campfire. We are so much more “together” at the cottage and I love the lack of television, computer, telephones and daily stressors. We have just returned from 4 days at the cottage and would recommend this type of vacation to any family, regardless of the age of children.

  257. Our 3 day weekend trip to a cabin in Blue Ridge Mountains, NC. Hot tub, cool breeze, blazing fires, outdoor exploring, and QUIET. I can’t wait to go back!

  260. Was lucky enough to win a trip to Australia last Summer and it truly was the trip of a lifetime.

  261. my favorite vacation was renting a cabin that was inside Rocky mountain National park. It was a wonderful base to use to explore the park, and a great place to come back to after exploring the local shops.
I hope The cabins are still there and did not burn in the recent fires.

  262. That looks like a fun vacation. Our family loves to do anything ocean or animal related for our vacations.

  263. My favorite vacation was to Daytona with my husband before we were married. 5 days on the beach and the road trip there was great!

  270. This would be a great vacation for the family. You could go to Sea World and Six Flags. My kids have always wanted to go to Six Flags.

  271. Looks like so much fun! My favorite vacation was when I was a teenager. My mom and I (along with my stepdad) went to Carlsbad Caverns and I LOVED it. I really want to go back. It was so beautiful. We also went sightseeing around Texas and went to a bunch of museums.

  272. I’ve ridden on the Sky Screamer & thought it was fun. I look forward to experiencing Aquatica soon. I live in San Antonio, but still don’t try to do it all in one summer. The zoo is open 365 days/year. We’ll go there for Halloween.

  273. I have to admit that San Antonio had never even crossed my mind as a “vacation destination before this post. Hey; it’s still not Disneyland or Disney World, but for those of us in the Midwest, it might be a little closer. Thanks for highlighting some of the possibilities there.

  274. My favorite vacations are the almost sponatenous ones- we went to the airshow a couple of weeks ago it was wonderful!

  275. I like the Riverwalk in San Antonio. It’s funny that the Alamo is in the middle of town with a Subway across the street.

  276. I looked up the San Antonio weather forecast, and it’s just as hot there as it is here. I think a Spring or Autumn vacation would be more comfortable for me, which would make it a lot more fun.

  277. I wish every large city would put together a SAVE program so that more families can afford to vacation locally & save money at the same time!

  278. San Antonio is such a beautiful city, especially around the holidays. Also, they have so much to do. You can enjoy the Riverwalk, Six Flags, the wax museum… I can go on and on. I love San Antonio and enjoy going there every chance that I can, and so will you.

  279. I love all things Texas and especially San Antonio. If I can get back that way I will be sure to put SAVEinSA to good use. Thanks for the valuable information.

  280. o wow all those rides look sooo fun! i love amusement parks and fun things like that that you can do with your family and has something for ppl of all ages. but sadly i wont be planning a trip to san antonio any time soon! but thanks for the great post!

  281. Every one of my friends who have been to San Antonio loved it. There is so much to do and almost always perfect weather. I would love to go to the boardwalk and try some of the food!

  282. There are tons of free or inexpensive historical things to see in San Antonio, too – not that the amusement parks aren’t cool, but they’re really not that different than other regional theme parks around the country. If you’re going to go visit a different city, see the city!

  283. I have never been to this place or state before..And i love your review and those places sound like wonderful places to take a family on vacation and even better when you can save money on your vacations…thanks for sharing

  284. I HAVE NEVER BEEN TO SAN ANTONIO BUT WOULD LOVE TO GO THERE, I WILL HAVE TO CHECK ON SAVEinSA

  285. San Antonio would be nice to visit- It does look like fun! But it would be terribly expensive for me. I live on the East Coast…

  286. Sounds like an awesome place to vacation If I lived in the midwest it would be a great idea. I’m on the east coast though and its so far away.

    • My family would LOVE to visit, but too expensive for my daughter to take herself and 4 kids (and me of course). Wonder if sea World has a chance to swim with the dolphins, and 2 of the kids have autism and this experience would apparently be very beneficial for them. BTW I couldn’t enter the first mandatory thing as it would not let me type anything, I ht submit, thinking that it would send me back, but unfortunately I now look totally dumb, thanks for all the chances to win.

  287. We went to San Antonio 2 years ago and enjoyed it. We didn’t spend nearly enough time there and would like to go back. We have no young children, so the theme parks aren’t that important to us. The area downtown is filled with history as is the surrounding area. A downtown hotel would be perfect.
    Thanks for the information.

  288. Being from and still living in Texas, I can tell you, San Antonio is a wonderful city with plenty to do and great cultural events. It’s beautiful any time of the year

  289. How fun! I’m up in Canada and we haven’t had the chance to visit many states (only one of us has a current passport at the moment) but Texas is definitely high on my list of ones to hopefully see someday.

  290. I haven’t been to San Antonio and this SAVE program does seem to offer great savings, especially on the hotel rates. I love water parks- especially in the summer, but right now San Antonio is too far away for us to undertake a trip there – perhaps in the future

  291. While the SAVE program sounds enticing, it is something to plan for as we live in Florida, so San Antonio is not in our immediate future. Although, my son was stationed there in the service and simply loves the town, as it has so much to offer. Thanks for the reminder though for next year, as that should give us some time to save for the trip.

  292. I am originally from Texas and always loved the San Antonio River Walk. It’s a definite must see for everyone!

  293. This looks like so much fun! The animal adventure seems like it would be the coolest. Unfortunately rides make me motion sick!

  294. I visited San Antinio repeatedly while stationed in the area in the Air Force. I still remember the boardwalk, the river and all the fantastic shops and restaurants. If you haven’t been to San Antinio you are cheating yourself. It is a wonderful city to visit and check out the zoo it is one of the best in the nation and I have been to all the big city zoos in the USA.

  295. I have always wanted to go to San Antonia, my Husband got to go 2 years ago for work and I was so bummed we couldn’t go together and enjoy a walk on the Riverwalk. Love this post tho, because I didn’t know about all the other things you could do. One of these days…maybe!
