With the warm months almost here, it is time for two things in my house. We always go through the closets and purge a lot of stuff we do not need or want anymore. After we have made some room in the house, I get to do a little decorating. This year we had to redecorate in Caitlin’s room as she was in dire need of a new comforter and curtains. The next room for me to tackle is the living room. I have not done a lot to it in the last few years and it is in need of a little face lift. Adding decorative throw pillows is always affordable and easy to do. I am never sure what kind to get, what size, color and all of that pillow stuff. I decided to check into what tips I could find to help me make the right choices. Here are some great ones:
- Size: he average throw pillow is between 16-18″x16-18″, but that is for a larger sofa or chair. If you have a smaller sofa or a smaller chair like a small side chair, you will want to scale down the size of the pillow.
- Filling: There are usually 3 types of filling for pillows: feather, foam, or a synthetic mix. Down pillows are the most comfortable and are the squishiest, but are also more expensive. The other fillers will maintain the shape of the pillow, but are not as comfortable.
- Number of Pillows: The rule of thumb is to always go for an odd number of pillows. The best way to know how many is again about the size of the piece of furniture. For a small chair, choose 1 pillow while a love seat may get 2 and a larger sofa may need 5.
- Patterns and Colors:This is one area that most people get tripped up. For a large sofa, you may want to choose 2 solid pillows for the ends that contrast with the color of the sofa. In the middle, you may want to use an odd shaped pillow in a pattern that would pull in the color of the furniture. Do not be afraid to mix stripes with plaids or a floral with a gingham. No matter the color, amount, size or filling you choose, you want to buy your pillows from a company that knows about pillows. One of the leaders in the industry who is known for their enormous selection and quality is Pillow Decor.
