Summer Learning Loss

There is something called “Summer Learning Loss” in which children’s knowledge declines over the summer. On average, children will regress 2.6 months in their math skills and approximately 2 months in their reading levels. If children are on the low income end of the spectrum, these numbers are a bit higher. Talk about taking one step forward and two steps back! There are plenty of things we can do to help kids stay consistent with their learning levels from the prior year until the next school year begins. In order to stop this summer learning loss, Netflix has added some wonderful programming to keep your kids brains active.

With the record high temperatures we have had this summer, the kids are staying inside. It is not always easy to keep them entertained, but with the great kids shows on Netflix, you can. Letting your kids watch TV can be a fun as well as an educational experience. They can watch a documentary about dinosaurs or the moon for younger kids or Blackfish or Food, Inc. for the older kids and adults. You can keep your little ones’ brains active all summer long with such favorites as The Magic School Bus or LeapFrog: Math Adventures to the Moon.
