With summer in full swing, many parents are trying their best to keep their kids active and entertained. Usually, this means this means that we are signing them up for summer camps, summer sports and participating in any other recreational activities that we can get their hands on. Increased outdoor activity often means unexpected injuries. According to the National Safety Council, the total cost of unintentional injuries in 2011 was $753 billion. That is a lot of money being shelled out for unplanned medical expenses! I don’t know about you, but these are not costs that have been worked in to my budget! Every sport and activity is a little different, but there are a few tired and true practices that hold true regardless of the activity. The following summer safety tips can help save you a lot of stress, and money, this summer!
4 Summer Safety Tips For Kids on the Go
- Use The Appropriate Gear: Don’t ever second guess using safety equipment, even if it looks “optional.” As a parent, it is our job to make sure that our children have whatever gear it takes to remain safe during any sports or outdoor activities. Helmets, knee and elbow pads and mouth guards are all pieces of gear that can make a tremendous difference in the long run.
- Prep Before The Big Game: Kids are used to going 100 miles per hour at all times, but it is important to remind them to slow down. No matter how big or small, muscles need to be warmed up before being used. By warming up, your child can have fun and reduce the chances of a sports related injury at the same time.
- Don’t Over Do It: As adults, we know when to say enough is enough. Kids tend to push through, even if they aren’t feeling that great. We need to teach our children that if at any point they feel pain or discomfort, they must notify their coach and excuse themselves from the game. Sitting on the sidelines is no fun, but a sports related injury can take them out of the big game all summer long.
- Be Covered For Accidents: It is our job as parents to make sure that our families are protected in the event of an accident. Having a supplemental accident policy on our accident prone children almost seems like a no-brainer. In the event that an accident does happen, it will help to absorb any hospital costs and the cost of taking time off of work.
When it comes down to it, that broken arm at the beginning of summer should not come as a surprise to your wallet! That’s where my friends at Aflac come in to play. Aflac can help provide peace of mind and cash benefits to help your family make it though unexpected injuries. An even bigger benefit to Aflac, they recently introduced One Day PaySM – an initiative that allows Aflac to process, approve and pay eligible claims in just a day! Enjoy your summer and be ready for whatever curve balls might lie ahead!
