san juan del sur

I received compensation as part of my affiliation with this Ambassadorship via Splash Media Engagement on behalf of Luigi Bormioli. The opinions on this blog are my own. On the Pacific side of the Nicaragua/Costa Rica border, lies San Juan del Sur. This small, coastal community sits in a protected harbor where fishing boats anchor off the beach. Golden brown surfers, fishermen, beachcombers, and barflies pilot the narrow streets and crescent beaches in search of frivolity and adventure.

Our hotel room was connected to a restaurant/bar that had to be passed to get to the street. Needless to say, some mornings we would get trapped in the web of the bar and get stuck drinking Sunrise Rum Punch cocktails until we would emerge to pursue the many treasures of San Juan del Sur.

Three Things To Love About San Juan del Sur

  • Playa Maderas: This popular surfing destination is just a few kilometers from downtown. Even though the path over the hanging bridge at the end of the beach is a shortcut, it is still a haul. One of the local hotels will have vans and trucks loaded with surfboards that make the trek to and from La Maderas several times daily. Beyond the surf break the beach alternates between sand and smooth rock. It is a private and unspoiled walk that you will not forget.

  • SJDL Beach: The town of San Juan del Sur sits on a crescent beach that seems connected to the water. It is hard to tell where the beach ends and the restaurants begin. As the long waves roll in, fish of all types can be seen in the clear water, lit up by the setting sun behind them. Stingrays swim by searching for bait and can clearly be seen down in the water.
luigi bormioliFishermen wade into the surf and cast hand lines with live bait to the passing jack creveles.  These locals pull the large jacks out of the water all day with simple wood blocks and lines.
  • Sunrise Rum Punch: This rum cocktail was so delicious I just had to recreate it when I got home. It is a simple recipe that just turns any day into a vacation. When it’s time for mine, I think this drink deserves to be served in a Luigi Bormioli glass. Their beautiful glassware rivals fine crystal and is both affordable and widely available. It has a brilliant color and sound that retains it’s brilliance after thousand of industrial dish washing cycles.  It really has a level of strength and durability that you will enjoy for years to come.
