I recently participated in The Complete Idiot’s Guide For Dummies Challenge. The Complete Idiot’s Guide for Dummies is a challenge where two well-known educational guides, The Complete Idiot’s Guide Series and the For Dummies series, are compared to see which proves to be the most useful.
I was very interested in seeing how both series compared. I’ve read several books from of each series and found each one very useful, but I’ve never compared books published on the same topic from both This challenge was the perfect opportunity to do this. The topic I selected was Nutrition. I received The Fourth Edition of Complete Idiot’s Guide to Total Nutrition, and The Fourth Edition of Nutrition for Dummies to review. I chose to review the Nutrition books because it’s a topic I enjoy studying and I believe that having prior knowledge in nutrition education would make it easier to compare the books.
After reading both books, I found The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Total Nutrition to be the more comprehensive nutrition book and the information better organized. Both books covered the basics of nutrition, but the The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Total Nutrition includes a lot more of the other topics related to nutrition: exercise, weight management, healthy cooking recipes, nutrition for special populations (diabetes, cancer, pregnancy, childhood, vegetarian), food allergies and food intolerance, herbal supplements and remedies. Nutrition for Dummies doesn’t even cover half of these topics, but does cover a few topics not featured in the Idiot’s Guide to Total Nutrition: digestion, appetite, food’s affect on mood, and food processing.
As a personal trainer and health educator, I would recommend clients to read both of these books to learn as much as they could about nutrition. However, as busy parent that understands that time is hard to come by, reading two books on the same topic might not be the best use of time. So, I’d recommend The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Total Nutrition over Nutrition for Dummies. The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Total Nutrition is packed full of the most information and would serve as a valuable resource to improving diet and making healthy lifestyle changes.
