celebrityIn recent years, we have perhaps become accustomed to the plethora of reality shows which have invaded our TV schedules, particularly during primetime slots during weekday evenings and at the weekends. It seems we can’t even pick up the remote these days without watching people being taken out of their comfort zones.

One night we may be viewing a group of celebrities – some more famous than others, it has to be said – being taught how to survive in the jungle, while the next evening we are being treated to the unedifying sight of wannabe superstars giving their all in a bid to persuade judges that they are the next Rihanna or Kanye West.

Amid the more showy TV offerings, we can also see a number of home décor shows, and these have become increasingly popular in the past decade or so. And while they are rather entertaining to watch, they can also be something of an inspiration when the time comes to redecorate a living room or renovate a tired kitchen.

It may be that, as a result of these shows, we have become more and more aware of the way a room might look. We pay attention to the finer details of the colour schemes that are used, the ornaments that are strategically placed and the accessories that are implemented to give an overall effect we can be proud of.

It’s a room, not a showroom!

This is perfectly understandable, of course, but there is still a need to make sure the furniture items are as comfortable as possible. It’s all very well taking time and effort, not to mention money, to create what looks like a showroom, but if you don’t want to spend much time there the whole project will have been a little wasteful in the end.

We all love to own some wonderfully comfortable furniture for those occasions when we need to unwind. The trouble is that some people seem to place all of their focus on the way certain chairs and sofas look, rather than on how great it feels to sit on them. It seems a shame to ignore the more practical reasons to buy these items.

The next time you decide to give a room a lift, you need to bear in mind the time that you will be spending there. It goes without saying that the way the room looks will be important, but it will also need to be a welcoming retreat for those times when you want to unwind.

The secret to wonderful décor is nearly always a subtle combination of form and function, so make sure one doesn’t cancel out the other. This is a process that will always require a great deal of thought before you put anything into practice, so remember the overall picture at all times.
