One of my favorite things to do in the summer is to invite a bunch of people over for a cookout. There is nothing to hit the spot like a hamburger or hot dog cooked on the grill. When I was little, my dad would grill out almost every night during the warmer months. My mom certainly appreciated the break from cooking and we enjoyed the smells and tastes of the food he made. We have a really small deck and we do not have room for a full size grill. We have been using a portable camping grill which allows you to make a total of 2 burgers or 5 hot dogs at a time! After using this little guy for almost 4 years, he finally gave out and we had to find another option for our grilled foods. You can grill just about anything you can think of on this grill, including steaks, seafood, vegetables, fruit and more. The innovative design directs the excess oils and fats away from your food and into the drip pan below. By doing this, you get a healthier meal, less calories, and you do not lose one iota of flavor. The non-stick grill is nice and big, wipes clean and the drip pan is dishwasher safe. I am super clumsy and I appreciate the cool-touch handles so I do not burn myself if I need to move the grill. The grill disassembles for easy cleaning and the detachable cord has several settings for the perfect temperature. So far, we have made burgers, grilled cheese, chicken and veggie kabobs and grilled vegetables. This is one of the most versatile and much used small appliances we own and I look forward to trying out many new recipes for years to come!
Now that I have started eating healthier, I have cut out red meat from my diet. I must admit, I was initially bummed that I would be missing out on my favorite grilled foods this summer. I decided to see what healthy options for burgers were available and I was surprised at the plethora of options. I love turkey and black beans, so I decided to try this Turkey Black Bean Stuffed Burger Recipe. I stuffed mine with Gouda cheese and mushrooms and the flavor is absolutely mouthwatering! My husband is not one to turn away from 100% beef burgers, but he gave this one a try and he loves it! If you are looking for a healthier option for your burgers this season, you cannot go wrong with this one!
Turkey Black Bean Stuffed Burger Recipe:
- 1 cup black beans, rinsed and slightly crushed
- 1 pound ground turkey
- ¾ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- ½ cup Japanese-style bread crumbs (panko)
- 1 egg
- 1 package dry onion soup mix
- Preheat an outdoor grill for medium-high heat and lightly oil the grate.
- Mix black beans, ground turkey, Parmesan cheese, bread crumbs, egg, and onion soup mix with your hands in a large bowl. Divide into 6 portions and shape into patties.
- Cook on preheated grill until no longer pink in the middle, 5 to 6 minutes per side. An instant-read thermometer inserted into the center should read at least 165 degrees F (74 degrees C).
