Small businesses are an integral part of the world’s work force and the number of them in the USA has steadily climbed over the last 30 years. According to the SBA , small businesses account for 54% of all US sales, 55% of all US jobs and employs close to 8 million people. Of the 23 million small businesses in the US, only 29% are run by women. Sadly, when you look at the statistics of other countries worldwide, the numbers are much smaller. There are approximately 92 million small businesses throughout the world (not including the US) and of that number, only about 10% are owned and operated by women. These low numbers are not representative of the passion, desire or drive of women who want to own their own business. What the number does represent is the difficulty women face in trying to be an active business owner who contributes to their community’s economy.
Women Run Businesses
Walmart has started a phenomenal program that is changing women’s lives all over the world. The program is called “Empowering Women Together”. The program is part of Walmart’s Global Women’s Economic 5-year commitment which will continue through 2016 and will source $20 billion from women run businesses.Through this program, women are being given the chance to a better life for themselves, their family and their community. Walmart has started the Store For Good, and has given a dedicated space at Walmart.com where consumers can buy products from women-owned businesses or from a company that is dedicated to supporting businesses that are owned and operated by women. Among the approximate 200 products available in the Store For Good, are supplied by 19 businesses in 9 countries. You can purchase intricately hand crafted apparel, jewelry, home goods and even specialty foods! Among the products available, you will find jewelry from Peru, home goods from Haiti, laptop cases from Cambodia and food from Canada.
You can see a full range of the available products on the Walmart Empowering Women Together Pinterest board. It is uplifting to know that with each purchase made from Empowering Women Together, you are helping to create new jobs, which will in turn lift up the economy in the local community and the lives of all those involved are better than they were just a short time ago. To give you a better perspective about how incredibly important this program is, please watch this short video, Gahaya Links and Full Circle Exchange. You will meet two amazing sisters who took a family tradition, handed down for generations that literally, changed a village and is now 4,000 strong and growing! Now that you have seen some of the gorgeous products available and met just a few of the women who made them, make your next purchase one that is meaningful, to the women you purchase it from and the person you give it to. Tell the recipient of the gift where it was bought and the story behind it. I am pretty sure that once you start this blog version of paying it forward, more people can be educated and will make their next purchase from the Store For Good.
I am part of the Mom It Forward blogger network. Mom It Forward and Walmart partnered in support of this campaign. Walmart compensated me for participation in this campaign. However, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
