They say reading out-loud to children is important, and I truly believe that to be right. When Megan was young we always read books with her, and we continued that tradition with Anna and Ethan when they were born. Megan is now 9 years old and reads on her own. However, Anna and Ethan are still only 5 years old so we still read books out-loud with them.
All three children have always loved our time together reading books, and I am sure it has definitely helped peak their interest in reading as well. There is one book I want to read to my children called "Captain No Beard – An Imaginary Tale of a Pirate's Life" by Carole P. Roman. It is for children ages 3 to 8, although I know my 9 year old still loves to sit and listen to a good story. This book sounds like it is a perfect book for both my son and the girls since it is an adventure tale filled with pirates, mermaids, danger and excitement. My son loves pirates and my girls would turn into mermaids if they could.
This is Roman's debut book and has already garnered great reviews from Kirkus Review, The Children's Book Review, and The Foreword Review. Here is what they had to say:
"Roman draws the reader in from the first page with illustrations that are cheerful and clever." -Kirkus Review
"It's awe-inspiring when a book offers young readers a sense of purpose and encourages them that they too can determine their own destinies with hard work and perseverance." -The Children's Book Review
"She foregoes the often-used technique of rhyming text in favor of a more natural, conversational tone that effectively captures the spirit of a child's imagination and daily play." -The Foreword Review
In fact, she has already earned the coveted Kirkus Star of Merit for her first work and is hard at working on three more stories of Captain No Beard and his crew, a book about yoga for young children as well as a new series about different cultures around the world through a child's eyes.
Here is a little synopsis of this book:
Captain No Beard and his pirate ship the Flying Dragon set sail for a voyage with his fearless crew of four: First Mate Hallie, Mongo the mast climbing monkey, Linus the loud mouthed lion, and Fribbit the floppy frog. Which is really a young boy named Alexander, his cousin Hallie and three stuffed animals, once they aboard his bed their world is transformed into a magical vessel sailing the seven seas on dangerous and exciting adventures and even facing a horrible storm.
Carole P. Roman is a former teacher turned businesswoman. She has successfully run a family business with her husband that employs close to five hundred people. Her most favorite job is being grandmother to her many grandchildren.
"Captain No Beard An Imaginary Tale of a Pirate's Life" sounds like such a fun book, and one that would make a great Christmas gift for the three of them to share. This book is available through Amazon!
