Make Food Preparation Fun

As the kids are getting more interested in cooking, I am trying to make food preparation fun.  I think if you add a little flair and fun to your time in the kitchen, the kids will be more interested in helping out with meals.  I have been slowly adding colorful and fun items for prepping, cooking and baking.  The kids have been a big help in the kitchen and it is so fun to just hang out, prepare a meal and then sit down and enjoy our collaborative efforts.  Here are some tips for making meal prep fun and safe.

    1. Hand hygiene is a must before you begin to prepare your food as well as throughout the process.  Teaching kids that this is a very important step will help them start out with good habits they will carry into adulthood.
    2. Make sure sleeves are rolled up, hair is pulled back, hot pads are nearby and everyone is wearing an apron.  Is an apron really necessary you ask?  Of course not, but it sure makes cooking fun!

  • Practice with plastic knives before using the real thing.  Be sure to teach the kids the basics of knife handling and remind them to take their time.  If there is one thing you should not hurry in the kitchen is when using a sharp knife.
  • Teach your kids to follow directions!  I know it seems silly, but I was really surprised that my kids weren’t sure why following directions was so important.  Well, when they tried to make a cake without following a recipe, and then tasted the cake (and I use the term loosely), they realized how important following a recipe is.
  • Clean up as you go.  This was something my mom stressed with me and I have done so with my kids. This is one lesson I think was one of the most important lessons my mom taught me.
  • Have fun!!!  Take your time and enjoy the moment.  It sounds contrite, but these moments are what memories are made of and they will be the times your kids will look back on fondly.

Colorful Serving Bowls

One of my favorite things in the kitchen is the colorful serving bowls I received from Zak Designs.  I reviewed a set of the on the go sets back in the spring, and the bottle and lunch bag are one of the most used items in the kitchen.  The Zak Designs company has been around since 1976 and their main focus was to design and manufacture products that would make your time in the kitchen as well as entertaining more fun.  The commitment to make functional and durable items for the kitchen has been as strong as their commitment to use eco-friendly materials in their products.  One of my favorite contacts is Chris Cogley from Zak! Designs and it was a pleasure to work with him again.  Chris has a knack for helping me choose just the right products for review.  For this review, I knew I wanted to choose an assortment of colorful serving and food prep bowls.  I received a great grouping of bowls made from recycled melamine that were a great addition to my collection.  I received:

  • Colorways Large Colander (3-quart) – $14.99
  • Confetti Divided Bowl (10-inch) – $12.99
  • Confetti Mixing Bowl with Lid (1.5-quart) – $12.99
  • MeeMe Square Trivet – $13.98
  • Preston 1.5-quart Mixing Bowl with Lid (Set of 2) – $23.98

I absolutely love my Zak Designs products and I cannot wait to see what Chris may have in store for me the next time we work together!!

One reader will receive the same group of products as were in the review, for a total of $78.93
