One of the many delights of cruising is the seemingly endless supply of delicious food that is on offer. When you go on holiday, you often don’t want to think too much about resisting tasty food. However, on a cruise, with all of the food surrounding you at all hours of the day, the risk of putting on a few too many pounds is a real one.
So what should you do? How can you hold back and ignore the temptation to eat too much? If you want to return from your cruise without piling on the pounds, here are a few tips to keep in mind.
Steer Clear of the Snacks: You will notice as soon as you step aboard your cruise ship, that the amount of delicious-looking snacks on offer is going to be a huge temptation. The all-day buffet, tasty dishes all over the place – it seems that you are never far away from food.
You are on holiday, and you should enjoy yourself. However, try to limit the food you eat to three meals if you are worried about putting on too many pounds. So give the snacks a miss for the most part, and stick to eating at mealtimes.
Go Easy on the Drink: Just as overindulging with food can be a problem, drink can also present a temptation. By all means enjoy yourself, but remember that alcoholic drinks and sugary drinks are quite heavy on the calories. Try to stick to water and lighter options as much as possible if you want to reduce your calorie intake.
Eat in the Dining Room: If you are worried about the temptation of so much nice-looking food all around you, try to eat most of your meals in the dining room. By sitting down to order from a menu, it can be easier to control the amount of food that you eat compared to an all-you-can-eat buffet. You will also usually eat slower, and you may be able to make special requests for lower-calorie alternatives.
Eat Lots of Fruit: Rather than getting hungry and then filling yourself up on less-healthy food at mealtimes, try to snack on healthy foods during the day. If you have the option of a fruit basket in your cabin, this is an ideal way to keep full on delicious fruits so that you will not be so tempted by the other food on offer on the ship.
Take Advantage of the Fitness Classes: The temptation on a cruise can be to sit next to the pool every day and soak up the sun whilst moving as little as possible. However, many cruises such as Princess Cruise specials often come with some excellent fitness classes to help you keep in shape while enjoying yourself.
Try to check out some of the fitness classes to see if there is anything that looks interesting. Just half an hour or so of physical activity will help you to feel great and help you to avoid overindulging. You might even want to check out a dance class, which is another fun way to stay active.
Stay Active Every Day: As well as going to dedicated fitness and dance classes on your cruise, make an effort to keep physical each day. You can do this through little things like taking the stairs instead of the elevator or going for a walk around the deck once each day. If you like sitting by the pool, try to take a dip once a day and tread water for 20 minutes to get your heart-rate going, and you’ll be doing yourself a huge favour.
Get Active on Your Excursions: When you venture onto dry land on excursions, which could include places like Fiji, Vanuatu and New Caledonia, avoid the temptation to spend the whole time lying on the beach. Instead, consider joining an active excursion. You will often have a range of activities to choose from, such as hiking, kayaking, abseiling, mountain biking, snorkelling and more. So see what is available and get active.
Enjoy Your Cruise Without the Weight Gain: The temptation to eat as much as you can is a real one when you go on a cruise. However, you can still have a fantastic time without overindulging. Keep the above tips in mind, and try to look after yourself on your cruise to make the experience an even more positive one.
