Recently I have been looking into ways to reduce stress in children. Now that Caitlin is in middle school, her anxiety level has gone through the roof. I think as a parent we worry about our kid’s performance in school, but I think we forget how tough it is to be a kid. They are up early; they are running from class to class, worrying over peer pressure, homework, activities, and more. That is a recipe for a stress induced life style. One of the reasons we took Henry out of school was from all the stress he was facing. I am not kidding when I tell you he would get a stomach ache and diarrhea every morning before school. It was heart breaking to see him get so worked up every day. That prompted me to look into ways I could help the kids get rid of this stress and be more relaxed in their daily lives. I found some great tips, and here are just a few:
Reduce Stress In Children
Affirmations: Teach your children to begin their day with positive affirmations. It is suggested they look into the mirror and say the affirmations to themselves.
Breathing: Teaching your child to take in deep breaths and letting them out slowly will have a tremendous effect on this tension level. It is recommended that you have your child stand in front of the mirror while they are learning their new breathing technique.
Relaxation: Muscle relaxation is a key tool in helping your child relax and let their stress slip away. Starting at the head, you would tell the child to relax their forehead, then the mouth and so on. You might play music during this routine or you may have a book you can read to your child or they can read themselves. Imaginations For Kids is a company with a superb book that is all about helping your child relax. Carolyn Clark, the author has created a series of stories and gorgeous illustrations geared at helping your child unwind from their day.
Relaxation Techniques For Kids With Autism
Henry has so much anxiety in his everyday life that I wanted to find relaxation techniques for kids with autism. I have found some avenues to help him decompress, but I have found I need an arsenal of ideas. What works one day may not work the next, but may work a month from now! I love Carolyn Clark’s book, Imaginations, Fun Relaxation Stories and Meditations for Kids ($19.99) as much for the stories as I do for the beautifully colorful and whimsical illustrations. The book is filled with stories that can help children visualize and learn calming techniques that will serve them well throughout life. Henry loves this book and especially loves the cute monkey eye pillow he uses while he lays next to me as I read from the book. This has been a boon for our family and I am sure your family would love it as much.

I almost took our big guy out of school.. things progressed when he started Jr. High, the pressure of getting the locker open, getting to class on time.. was a bit over whelming for him.. we had to go back and adjust his 504 plan.
