Reasons To Cook With Cast Iron
My husband has been looking into reasons to cook with cast iron cookware.  He has wanted a cast iron skillet for a while now and I never knew if it was a good choice or not.  I am making 2013 my year to finally lose the extra weight I have been carrying for more than 10 years now.  My husband has put on about 40 pounds since we were married, so he is also interested in getting healthy and making better choices.  Before we made the plunge to invest in a cast iron skillet, I decided to do some research on why they are a healthy alternative.  I found the three top reasons to make the switch and I wanted to share them with you.

  1. Oil: When you cook with a cast iron skillet, you season the pan once and then you continue to cook with very little additional oil from that point on.  When you season a cast iron pan, you will take the oil of your choice and coarse salt and cover the bottom and sides of the pan.  Heat the burner until the oil starts to smoke and turn off the burner.  Once the pan cools, wipe the entire inside of the pan with a paper towel.  This will give your pan a non-stick surface and the pan will last you forever!
  2. Chemicals: Unlike many of the cookware companies who use chemicals to make their products non-stick, cast iron pieces are completely chemical free.  When you cook with a traditional non-stick pan, the chemicals the pan is treated with can come off the pan and get into your food.  Not with cast iron!  Other than the oil and salt you used to season your pan, there are no chemicals whatsoever.
  3. Minerals: Did you know that over 10% of women in this country are considered iron deficient?  Rather than getting chemicals in your food when you cook with other cookware, cast iron will leach iron into your food.  This process will raise your iron intake and that is a good thing!
